Hemp Seed Oil Vs. MCT Oil
With all of the talk being mostly about CBD, hemp seed oil and MCT oil are often overlooked. As both are used frequently as a carrier oil for CBD and key ingredient in many topical's, we thought we'd give you a little more information about how these two oils work in and on your body!
Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp seed oil is a common carrier oil for CBD products that is rich in compounds that may help protect the brain and skin. It has a pleasant, nutty smell, is deep green color, and absorbs well into the skin. By themselves, hemp seeds do not contain cannabinoids (CBD, CBG...), however, hemp seed oil is often often marketed as CBD oil by unscrupulous Amazon sellers (CBD is extracted from the hemp plant body, not the seed).
Whether applied topically or ingested orally, hemp seed oil offers numerous benefits that many people can take advantage. It is considered safe for most people to use, and can help moisturize the skin from the inside out.
Ingesting Hemp Seed Oil
When ingested, omega-3 fatty acids, abundant in hemp seed oil, can help lower blood pressure in people with hypertension (high blood pressure). Studies have also shown that eating a diet high in linoleic acid significantly reduces total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol.
It has a high content of three polyunsaturated fatty acids: linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, and gamma-linolenic acid. And, its ratio of omega-6 (linoleic acid) to omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) fatty acids is 3:1 is considered ideal for health benefits in humans.
Hemp seed oil is known as a 'dry' oil, rich in essential omega fatty acids and protein. It is perfect for most skin types as it can moisturize without clogging pores, help balance oily skin and regulate the skin’s oil production. By preventing dry skin, hemp seed oil can also help prevent acne.
Moisturizes & Soothes Inflammation
One of the omega-6 fatty acids that hemp oil contains is gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory while simultaneously encouraging skin growth and new cell generation. This can help to calm inflammation and irritation on the skin, including acne and some conditions like psoriasis, while keeping the skin nourished and moisturized.
Treats Atopic Dermatitis
Part of what makes hempseed oil so beneficial to the skin is that it’s rich in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Consuming these nutrients can help to treat skin conditions like atopic dermatitis.

A 2014 review concludes that an increase in alpha-linolenic acid, one of the fatty acids in hemp oil, appears to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. This fatty acid, which doctors call linolenic acid, is also present in fish oils and flaxseed oil.
MCT Oil - MCT oil (medium-chain triglyceride (MCT)), most commonly derived from coconut oil, is a supplement that has become popular among athletes, body builders, coffee shops and keto diets because it is high in MCTs. As the name suggests, the oil contains medium-length chains of fats called triglycerides. And due to their shorter length, MCTs are more easily digested than longer-chain fatty acids found in many other foods. It contains a greater proportion of ketogenic MCTs than coconut oil and has been shown to boost metabolism and promote fullness to a greater extent.
Not to be confused with coconut oil, MCT has virtually no taste. And because of this, it is a popular carrier oil for flavored CBD products.
